 25 football supporters arrested

    November 13 2007 at 01:34PM

Italian police have arrested 25 people suspected of involvement in the riots sparked by the police shooting death of a football fan since the incident Sunday, the ANSA news agency reported.

Six fans of a third-division club in southern Taranto were arrested following clashes with supporters of Massese that forced the interruption of the match, ANSA said on Tuesday.

They were identified through police videos taken during the violence, ANSA said, adding that around 50 of these fans smashed a glass barricade and threw stones at police.

Eight fans were arrested in Milan, including two on Monday evening who wrote slogans against the police on public walls, ANSA said.

A third was arrested on Tuesday after clashes Sunday with Atalanta fans, during a match in nearby Bergamo against AC Milan that was also suspended.

The other five were arrested Tuesday for their part in clashes Sunday night between fans and police after the cancellation of the Inter-Lazio match.

Seven Atalanta fans had been arrested Monday.

In Rome, where the clashes were the most violent as the fan who was killed hailed from the Italian capital, only four people were arrested, but police are still investigating assaults on a police barracks and the headquarters of the Italian Olympic Committee.

Interior Minister Giuliano Amato told lawmakers on Tuesday that more arrests were likely in Rome after police identify rioters.
